How do you deal with Business Passion Blockers?

how do you handle passion blockers How do you deal with Business Passion Blockers?

We have all been there – being passionate for something, some project, some show, some event and then having someone like a boss or a client who is not so passionate, block that passion. Blocking meaning halting it, changing its course before the passion can be built upon and really grow to something cool and impactful.

This morning I was very excited about a ongoing initiative we are producing at Grass Shack Events & Media. I was really passionate when I presented the ideas this morning – ideas the client asked for, yet the client blocked this passion by saying- I don’t want to talk about this now.

I understand this is part of business and the selling process of any idea is a giant step. I moved away and we are regrouping but I sensed the whole teams deflating passion. The client had been passionate before, but it now just became a job.

Having a Global Meeting?

Want some great ideas from shows we have done in the past? Maybe it will spark some conversation to help give some ideas to our readers/listeners for their own shows.
In the below picture we had a very high level meeting for executives from all over the world. Of course the budget was tight so we decided to utilize Google earth for each of the attendees countries. The screens would shoot into each country and a iconic image of that country would come up. Then it would shoot out to the world and back into the next country. It was visually impressive and set the tone for the whole meeting. We really enjoyed putting it together and it made me want to see more of this beautiful world we live in.

Typographic Storytelling

I am headed into a week for a Sales Event we are producing here at Grass Shack Events & Media. This client is very open to doing things that engage the audience. A couple of the speakers are really great at this using images and large type to keep the audience visually stimulated as they give out some very dry information. What can you do to spice up your presentations?

Most of us use cell phone texting as a form of communication and Rive takes this a step further. This little story told by the poet Rive caught my attention. He made a little typographical fairy tale story which again made me think about how many different ways you can explain your story, your sales numbers, your marketing plan…….

Best way to judge respect

IMG 2712 Best way to judge respect

How do you know somebody is serious when they are working for you, or simply being a new friend. First way I judge is if that person is on time. I know it is a simple thing, but it is the most important way I judge if someone respects me.

The owner of the company at my old job did this to me one time which turned out to be the catalyst that made me start thinking about starting Grass Shack. He arrived 20 minutes late for my yearly review. The review was slated for an hour. He walked in plopped down in his chair and immediately asked why he should give me a raise when I bring in no money for him. Before I could answer him his assistant came in with some coffee and they chatted for a few minutes.

I felt I had been working my ass all year doing the job I was assigned to do which did not involve any sales work. Where I knew he would say something like this because he was a well known dick to anyone who met him, the being so late part really was the insulting part for me. It was so disrespectful because I worked all year for this one moment, yearly review. The rest of the year obviously was his because I received a paycheck from him.

I always plan to get to any meeting 1/2 hour before just to be on the safe side. If it is an important meeting it gives me time to collect my thoughts and walk in relaxed and ready instead of racing around trying to find parking and the meeting spot.

Chip Conley at the CommonWealth Club

Last night we had the good fortune to catch Chip Conley speak at the Commonwealth Club.
The Commonwealth Club of California is the nation’s oldest and largest public affairs forum, bringing together its more than 18,000 members for over 400 annual events on topics ranging across politics, culture, society and the economy. If you are in San Francisco it is a great place to see speakers of all types.

Carrie and I arrived early to grab a glasss of wine served by the staff of the Commonwealth Club. Carrie and her family have been in the hotel business forever (see history) and we also arrived early to snag a couple of front row seats. Chip came in and we chatted with him for a bit which was really fun start to the evening. I have to say he is a really nice, engaging guy.

Chip was speaking about his book PEAK and his experiences starting and running Joie de Vivre Hotels.

His philosophy is based on Andrew Maslows Hierarchy of Needs which is really interesting stuff. I think it can be applied to any business and I think if you are looking for a book this Christmas season for a friend this might be it.

chip+connelly+003 Chip Conley at the CommonWealth Club

Some notes I took from the speech:

Joie de Vivre hotels are developed keeping five expressive adjectives — and at least one popular magazine — in mind. This method of making an emotional connection with guests by catering to a psychographic rather than a demographic profile. For example the Rolling Stone -inspired Phoenix (funky, hip, young-at-heart, irreverent, and adventurous), to the Real Simple meets Dwell -inspired Hotel Vitale (urbane, revitalizing, modern, fresh, nurturing), to the literary New Yorker -inspired Hotel Rex (worldly, sophisticated, literate, artistic, and clever); each property speaks to a particular client and possesses its own dynamic personality.

Employees in the hospitality industry are historically hard to keep around. Chip and his executive staff like to find out what the employees with the task driven jobs think about their jobs and how to make it a calling for them. Basically what is the impact of the job they do, how does it effect others? How to make that job a calling so it is enriching. Something we all have to look at in our own jobs sometimes. Brings up a question –do you feel your job is a calling?

Loyalty- how to make loyalty your culture with customers, employees and investors.

All in all it was a great evening and we learned something. Plus, we had nice hot soup waiting for us at home. We curled up with PEAK on the couch and enjoyed a roaring fire.

Does funny make your creative

I saw this article in Fast Company Source. I have been involved many brainstorming efforts. Of course with our company Grass Shack Events & Media with my old company InVision Communications plus a few as a freelance event producer. The best ones come from a creative writing group I belong to, the Professional Bullwriters Association becuse they are basically my kooky friends. Always look to funny, kooky friends for ideas or to spur differnt thinking..

I have always liked having the weirdest folks in a brainstorm. The people I found the most creative also made me laugh the most. And looking back the ones were not funny didn’t really have any great ideas.

My experience validates this article. Whats your experience with funny folks in a brainstorm session?

Why You Should Include a Joker in Every Brainstorming Session

The Fast Interview: John Morreall on the link between humor and innovation, why authoritarian bosses fear humor, and the funniest CEO in America.

From: FastCompany.com | November 2007 | By: Kermit Pattison

John Morreall, a professor at the College of William and Mary, is the founder of Humorworks, a consulting firm for companies such as AT&T, Cisco Systems, IBM and Time Warner. He has written four books on humor and is working on a new one titled “Funny Business” with New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff.

You say that humor increases productivity, reduces conflict, and fosters change. Is this a joke?

Humor is healthy, especially the way it reduces stress. Humor is the opposite of fight-or-flight emotions — especially fear and anger. I can’t be laughing with you and angry or afraid of you at the same time.

How does it encourage creativity?

Humor makes us think more flexibly. People who think funny do better on creativity studies. To put it really simply, humor loosens up your brain to think of more possibilities and be more open to the wild and wacky ones. There is a guy at the State University of New York at Buffalo named Roger Firestien who has a center for the study of creativity. When he teaches brainstorming, he says you should put a joker in the group — somebody who will come up with preposterous ideas. Very often that will stimulate people to come up with ideas that will work. Let me give you an example. A bunch of paint engineers were moaning and bitching about how hard it is to get paint off a house. One guy says, “Why don’t we just put gunpowder in the paint and blow it off the house?” That led people to think, “What could we do that would be the equivalent of gunpowder?” They came up with a chemical they added to the paint and when you wanted to remove the paint you did a light wash with a second chemical over the first one. That didn’t blow it off the house, but it allowed it to drop off.

You cite studies that suggest the majority of executives rank humor as an essential attribute but the majority of business professors do not. What does that say about the effect of MBA programs?

MBA programs make people think more narrowly, not have as many people skills, and not be as widely educated as a business leader should be. It encourages too much specialization and makes people too serious and not flexible enough. So I think the overall effect of MBA programs is negative.

Who’s the funniest person in business?

Easily, Herb Kelleher of Southwest Airlines. In 1992, Southwest came up with a new advertising slogan and very quickly they got a call from another airline that had been using that slogan for about 10 years. Now, the standard way to handle that in American business is to turn it over to the attorneys. But Kelleher called the head of the other airline and said, look we can work this out much quicker: I hereby challenge you to an arm wrestling match in the in Dallas Sports Arena. They billed this as Malice in Dallas. Kelleher at this point was in his late sixties, a chain smoker who drinks a lot of bourbon. Kelleher comes into the ring and across his manager’s chest is a bandoleer, except instead of bullets in the loops he’s got airline-sized bottles of Wild Turkey. The guy from the other company was in his thirties, had been a weightlifter in college, was in great shape, and just whipped Kelleher. Kelleher was chain smoking through the thing, making jokes right and left. By the end of the thing, the guy from the other airline was laughing so hard he said, “You can keep the slogan.” Now this is not taught in business schools.

Are authoritarian leaders afraid of humor?

Authoritarian types initiate the humor but tend not to accept it from an underling. In a meeting, if you initiate humor you’ve got the table. Authoritarian bosses tend to be distrustful of humor because they don’t want to give up their power.

If you’re the boss and somebody puts you down, what do you do?

I don’t have a formula, but if there’s any way you can take it, take it. Willingness to expose yourself to criticism in a playful way just makes you look so much better and so much more human. People will feel a loyalty to that person that an authoritarian boss just cannot command.
