Apple Pulls Out Of MacWorld

So every conversation I have about meetings and events these days always turns to next year. Basically, that we all will have no events to work on. Or just really scaled back shows. Working on several proposals for clients and we joke in jest more than we usually do that this proposal will look very much different when we get onsite to produce the meeting or conference. (That is if it happens at all)

Several of my friends work on a huge Cisco show which usually gives them 6 months of work. It was cancelled.

So this morning I had just finished signing up for this years MacWorld in San Francisco – literally 2 minutes later I saw an article on SFgate.com saying Apple is pulling out of MacWorld after this year and Steve Jobs wont be presenting this year. Which is always an exciting highlight for MacHeads. His presentations are talked about whenever you read a Duarte, Garr, Kawasaki talking about how to give a great speech. [Read more...]

Okay, I know this is late but Grass Shack is insanely busy and I finally am getting to this.

I attended MacWorld again this year and I have to say I really enjoy this conference. I use a PC most of the time but we have 2 Macs in our house. As my wife says Macs are sexy. Granted, most of the attendees are far from sexy but the Mac world gives off a hipster vibe which I really enjoy. I also like that it is a short BART train ride away. I visited 2 days of the conference.

Highlights for me-

Hipster Mac crowd which is quite diverse. People are funky- lots of beards, crazy outfits, pony tails, man tons and tons of pony tails. Lots of aging hippies, Haight Street types. Someone should really sell pony tail products for mac users. You heard it here first.
Black people. Every tech conference has fat white guys, dodgey, corporate, button down white guy types, and Indians and Asians but MacWorld has tons of Black people as attendees. I like this only because macs are bringing in everyone.

The MDialog booth had these aging LA film producers looking like aging LA film producers. They gave attitude but yet had to talk to you. I am not sure about their product. I think they will sell it to film studios where you can get almost the same service from Blip. (for free)

Hot women. MacWorld does not just have the prerequsite booth babes, but actual hot attendees.

Podcast stage area was really cool to me. In fact my favorite spot. Alex Lindsay and Pixal Corps produced this stage. Alex Lindsay is a very likeable guy. And he knows his shit. He and his podcasting cronies Leo Laporte, Craig Syverson, Kenji something, seemed to be on stage all the time. I saw Craigs Syversons presentation again that I saw at the podcast academy. I have to apologise to Michael Geohagen for ripping his projector at the podcast academy in Ontario. His keynote made presentation wasn’t that great. The projector at the podcast academy really wouldnt have made a difference. I know the podgrunt guy can make great videos but he should really work on his delivery. Every time he starts he says something like. “I am sorry I really didnt have time to get this corrected” or some reason why it isn’t the way he wanted it. Incidentally, I was listening to Michael Geoghegans podcast from this years podcast expo as I rode BART to MacWorld. Really great info if you are thinking of producing a podcast and you want to make some money in podcasting.

I have finally gotten around to listening to the sessions I missed at the podcast expo. Great stuff. After slamming Tim about Blogworld and how it would take over the PME I have to eat my words. PME has some really great speakers. I really like listening to the Podcast expos podcasts. Since Tim will be paying speakers next year I am sure the bar will be raised again. Check out next years with name change New Media Expo in Vegas.
The podcast stage at Macworld also was flanked by the Podtech and Wizard Media booths which was great for the attendees. Alex and the presenters referred to them many times. Which seemed to be a good fit. Rob Walch looked extremely bored at the booth which had no pizzaz of the PME booths I have seen.

John Furrier – PodTech

Out front of the Macworld West was a guy playing this cool haunting funky fresh music. His name is Michael Masley. Very cool stuff. He should do the music for the whole conference. Creative instrument with these big ass claws he uses to play with.

Seemed like funkyness is all around. But that might just be San Francisco.

This RedCross add should scare people into
getting prepared.

I find it hard to read bumper stickers these days but I caught maybe 5 on this car at a redlight in front of Moscone.

Frank Chu a San Francisco moving landmark and his the Galaxies sign fit right in with the Apple crowd.

Here is the google booth a picture I am including for my friend Ms.Google in Dubai. They did a similar booth marketing to grab more attendees that we did for the Pepsi booth we produced in Hawaii. You had to visit all four sides of the booth and get a stamp to recieve fabulous prize. In this case it was some Google thongs. (the kind for your feet not your butt) Its a great way to get folks to see your whole booth. They also gave away a vespa.

The Crumpler Booth- I always enjoy the crumpler booth – they always design something fun to go with there bags. (sorry no pic)

The lowlights-

This cup of coffee cost me $2.50 but I only had to wait in line for 20 min to get it.
