Tell me a Story

Came across this video and thought it was a wonderful explanation of what the rescue team does and a fantastic marketing piece. I think more companies should move to videos and real stories. Everyone loves a great story. How can you use story to explain your message?

Control your Employees and be Invisible (FAIL)

So many companies are having a hard time grasping new marketing. I recently spoke to a woman who cannot access social media site from her office. But her job is sales and she wants to get in conversations with people via online. She is right and I suggested she look for another job that will let her succeed. I can remember a while back when companies would to let their employees use email for fear they would be able to transmit company secrets or waste time emailing friends. Look at us now? Know anyone who does not use email at work in some capacity?

Look at Southwest Airlines they have given control to their employees to be creative and have build a great brand. Check out the below videos and tell me if you think these passengers talked about their experiences flying with southwest. If they have a choice between another airline don’t you think this type of stuff will put them over the top? As one of the flight attendants says after his rap. “You wont see this on United”

Toilet Paper Races (Just some crazy memorable fun)

Bags for Beer

beerforbags Bags for Beer

So what is the best way to get your product to sell. TV Ad? Magazine Ad?

Crumpler a small manufacturer of messenger bags for camera equipment, cell phones and laptops came up with an idea for Bags for Beer. Premise was simple bring in enough beer to trade for a bag instead of cash. Say 2 cases of Stella Artois gets you the $105 dollar complete seed bag. Pretty easy.

Why would they do this? Well, it is basically costing them 40- 50k but this would not buy them two ads in a major consumer magazine. But look at how many eyeballs this promotion was getting it was written up in The New York Times, Time Out New York Magazine, Associate Press Newswire, many bloggers (I am writing about it now- all five of my readers now know about it) like Gizmoto.com, Popular Photography. They also would have after parties with all the beer to have beers with the employees and build the Crumpler community.

I think its a great idea only because beer is one of my best friends. What do you think? How could you do something like this for your product or service?

Second Life meet-ups

bloggslogo Second Life meet ups

I attended a get together in Second life yesterday. It was put on by iVillage.com. One thing that I find fascinating is the different people who are drawn to Second life. I was invited by the people from http://overtonecomm.blogspot.com/. They have a monthly get together called Second Thursday in Second Life. CC Chapman met us at Crayonville for the meeting place then we shot off to the iVillage loft.

(That’s me in the blue top and jeans)

About 22 folks (avatars) sat around in the ivillage loft and talked about companies in Second Life. Seems as if marketers, companies and PR professionals are learning to create experiences in virtual environments, versus destinations, which up to now has been the focus. With Linden Labs releasing the Second Life code to open source, this should make the Second Life platform even more interesting to developers and companies trying to build their brands there. Pretty exciting stuff. Remember when companies said they didn’t need a website? Know a company that doesn’t have one now? Landscape is changing!
