New Media Expo content Fire Sale?

1472306931 06342aa187 m New Media Expo content Fire Sale?Image by mmcallen via FlickrI saw this Podcast sales post in my Bloglines reader today. When ever Michael W. Geoghegan has a post on his blog it is usually interesting since he is a smart dude. I even enjoy his Search and Rescue posts since I was a full time firefighter for around 5 years. It seems they are selling all the Podcast Expo/Portable Media Expo/New Media Expo and Podcast Academy sessions for a great big fire sale. Maybe one last way for monetizing the content.

It is strange and fun to think back on the ride he and Tim Bourquin and other podcast pioneers have had with this podcasting stuff. Back in 2004 I was hooked by Reel Reviews, Podcast Brothers and the Daily Source Code. It was neat to be on the forefront of a new distribution method. I wondered how our company Grass Shack Events & Media could utilize podcast content for our clients. I produced several podcasts that each dribbled away or our industy term podfaded. I remember emailing Michael and Rob Walch from Podcast 411 about collaborating with them and our clients to do some podcaasting from our events. It never really materialized. I did one very small, tiny thing for P&GE with Rob but my clients never seemed interested in podcasting. It is ironic because today I am waiting for a conference call and the attendance is way down for this Global Sales Meeting we are producing and I was going to push us podcasting the sessions to the folks who cant get to the meeting. Its 2009 and I am still trying. (They went for it)

I emailed Tim a month or so ago because I have been waiting for a new Podcast Brothers show to come out but Tim Bourquin has always said they wont put out a show just to put out a show. I wondered with his loyal audience if they should still do some sort of show about the niche they lead. When I first listened to the podcast brothers I didnt know/or care about the expo and I enjoyed their take on the digital content niche.

This sale and the disappearance of the Podcast Brothers show makes me think the nails are in the coffin for the New Media Expo, Portable Media Expo, Podcast Expo etc. Also the Podcast Academy which I enjoyed and sadly also bashed in another post a while back. The Podcast Expo felt like a traveling podcast expo at first (like when I went to the Yahoo campus to attend one) but the free podcamps killed them off and it also had a feel like a good ole boys network with most of the same speakers at each one…… I feel like I rode the wave with these guys and did my best to support them. I went to all the Podcast Expos and 3 Podcast Academys. I met so many cool folks and made some great friendships. (was I one of the good ole boys?) One time I sat next to Chris Brogan this is before he was wildly famous at a Podcast Academy. After the first Portable Media Expo I wrote up a long list of things I thought Tim could do to increase the engaement of the audience. It was heartfelt gesture and I even put together a bid to handle the Audio Visual and staging for him the next year. I know we probably were too expensive for his bottom line but I wanted to help out if I could.

Makes me sad it is all over. Of course there are a ton of other conferences to go to Podcamps, Blogworld, SWSW but the community around the podcast expo was a classic community experience. I have always been behind the scenes at conferences and actually I had never been an attendee at a conference before the podcast expo. I have been to hundreds of conferences over the years but always as part of the production company. So thanks guys for the memories….. icon smile New Media Expo content Fire Sale?

I do wonder what Tim, Emil and Michael have in mind for the future. New Media is getting more popular by the day, the economy is slowing it down right now but it is a great time for innovation and creativity so I am sure they are planning more cool stuff.

I do think its great they are selling these sessions………

This sale of wonderful content is a must if you want to learn about podcasting, videocasting, seo, making money with podcasting etc…..

New Media Madness

If you are not sure about some popular technologies which are filtering into corporate communications.

Blog. A shortened form of weblog, a blog is a Web site that displays regular journal entries. While the earliest blogs were largely personal, thousands of corporate blogs exist today—more than 8 percent of Fortune 500 companies have one. A blog that uses video posts, rather than text, is called a vlog.

LinkedIn. A MySpace for the business world, this online networking Web site allows users to post profiles and search other user profiles to make professional contacts, search for new clients or recruit for open positions—the basic membership is free.

Twitter: A micro-blogging site. Keep in touch with your community by micro-blogging by 140 characters. Its a crazy new way of communicating. Several conferences are using Twitter to give out alerts on goings on.

Podcast. A downloadable audio (and sometimes video) file, often used to disseminate news stories, tutorials or radio shows. Users can subscribe to regularly recurring podcasts via RSS [see below].

RSS.Stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” RSS feeds are offered by media outlets and enable them to automatically update and distribute their content to anyone who has subscribed to their feed.

Second Life. An online, virtual world that boasts over six million users with its own currency and economy. A user’s virtual self is called an “avatar.”

SMS
Stands for “Short Message Service.” SMS services allow users to exchange text messages over wireless networks. Works well for disseminating real-time information updates, like changing traffic or weather conditions, to mobile devices.

Web 2.0
Coined in 2003, the phrase usually refers to online tools and communities that employ a model of multiple-user collaboration rather than static, informative content.

Wikis. A type of Web site whose content can be easily edited by users. The most well-known wiki is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that any Web visitor can add to or edit, but wikis are suitable for many collaborative projects.

What is the best way you start a conversation? Through your website? Forum board? Wiki? Through your Blog? Twitter? Through your podcast? Talkshoe? A favorite Social media site like – Myspace, Facebook, Linkedin? Ning? Gather? How about virtual worlds like Second Life or Kaneva? How about Flickr?

So many options to connect. I am interested in your favorite way of connecting?

How do you start the conversation

I read somewhere about a older college football coach getting an ipod and listening to rock and hip hop music to better understand his players. He basically wanted to learn his players language. I guess it ended up being the best season they ever had. Not sure if it was that years crop of players, or the harmony they all felt from the music.

My daughter and her boyfriend, who is 20 years her senior, seem to speak the same language. Yet she and I don’t really understand each other.

This sort of thing happens all the time. My grandson babbles at me all morning, and I don’t understand him. I tried to watch cartoons, but he doesn’t seem to understand them either. Then again he is five months old. I will keep trying.

Recently we pitched some creative to a client. The internal event staff loved it. The executives thought it was over the top. They ended up using a very old and tired idea. Everyone had seen it many many times. It went over like a box of yellow jackets pour on stage.

We really feel you have to push the limits to inform and entertain. Spending the money to fly attendees out to the event, the hotels, meals, all to bore them with stale PowerPoint is not good ROI. (that’s a word they like to hear) But that is our job to try and get them to use some creative delivery methods. Like clever opening videos, second life meetups, podcasts, videocasts, anything to get the audience engaged.

I guess I will give my executive clients ipods this next holiday season
