Check out the new book Trust Agents if you want to learn about Social Media

Trust Agents, the new book on social media marketing by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith, should be on your book purchase list. Where I think of Chris as a friend he is also really fricken smart and a personable guy. The main reason to read this book is in our industry of Events and Meetings social media is on the top of everyone’s lists of questions (along with Green Meetings) on how to do it and what its all about. This book will answer your questions. I do not know Julian Smith though I have heard him on the Podcast Media Hacks. He swears all the time to get his point across which I find refreshing. icon smile Check out the new book Trust Agents if you want to learn about Social Media He seems to be a no holes barred type of guy.

So think about buying this book…… it will put you a head of the game with Social Media.

This one’s a keeper. If you do business online (or do business with people who have ever been online) or know someone who once used a computer, I strongly suggest you get smart about the ideas in this book. ~Seth Godin

It is worth a read and shows how associations can use social media tools with limited staff and budget resources.

Social Media Club Case Study

I know this may not be Event or meetings related but it will start your gears a crankin on how Social Media can be used. I came across this from my friends in Hawaii Roxanne and Shane from Barefeet Studios Check them out they do some great work in Video and Social Media

Here the Social Media Club presented a case study with some very cool, simple ideas to use Social Media to help a brand. The brand of Ed Morita and Longhis. Some tasty looking food also icon smile Social Media Club Case Study Ed uses Twitter.com to speak to his community. He posts pictures of food and has little surprises for his community.

Control your Employees and be Invisible (FAIL)

So many companies are having a hard time grasping new marketing. I recently spoke to a woman who cannot access social media site from her office. But her job is sales and she wants to get in conversations with people via online. She is right and I suggested she look for another job that will let her succeed. I can remember a while back when companies would to let their employees use email for fear they would be able to transmit company secrets or waste time emailing friends. Look at us now? Know anyone who does not use email at work in some capacity?

Look at Southwest Airlines they have given control to their employees to be creative and have build a great brand. Check out the below videos and tell me if you think these passengers talked about their experiences flying with southwest. If they have a choice between another airline don’t you think this type of stuff will put them over the top? As one of the flight attendants says after his rap. “You wont see this on United”

Toilet Paper Races (Just some crazy memorable fun)

Increasing Attendance at Your Next Meeting through Social Media

I am a big proponent of Social Media. Obviously through podcasting and twitter but how can these things help attendance. Jon Trask sent me a link to a LinkenIn conversation going on in the Event Peeps group. Greg Taylor was asking about success stories using social media. A new book has just come out called The World Wide Rave and it is full of success stories but not all are event/ meeting related. So I did a little digging. here is an example I found on David Meerman Scotts Blog. (a soon to be guest on MeetingsPodcast)

How an active Facebook group drove 15,000 people to the Singapore Tattoo Show

I speak at dozens of conferences a year all over the world. Since organizers usually book me many months in advance, I have some visibility into how they promote the events. It tends to be the same old methods: Send an email and a direct mail to everyone who attended last year, buy some email and postal mailing lists and send some more promotions. Most shows build good Web sites and most have decent SEO. But that’s usually it.

What if you’re charged with promoting a brand new show? [Read more...]

Twitter Adds a Search Feature

2755v2 max 450x450 Twitter Adds a Search Feature TwitterA cool development at Twitter over the last 24 hours has been the addition of their new ‘name search‘.

You can search for people either by their username, first name or last name. Results are displayed in order of follower numbers. This is just another way to contact people using social media. I know we just had a post on twitter this week but this development makes it a tad easier to see if people in your network are twittering away!

Results seem to work pretty well and it is better than nothing – Darren Rowse of Problogger uses Twellow if he needs to find someone.

Not sure if this relates to Events & Meetings but keeping on top of the latest technology is always helpful. Merry Christmas!
