Twitter used for learning

So the landscape is changing for learning, especially for the youth of the world. The generations coming up are now using more collaboration for learning. Instead of the old preach to teach such things as Wikipedia, and online intelligent discussions in large classes are being utilized. This helps so everyone even the shy kids can be part of the conversation. The new way of learning is not just regurgitating information through test taking but thinking, solving problems through searching and researching.

Dr. Monica Rankin has been using Twitter discussions in her class and even follows from a distance when she is not in class and comments back though Twitter.

Could this be incorporated into the three life bloods of corporate meeting content? Training, education and of course networking?

What do you think?

Web Presence – Do you have any?

Grass Shack Events & Media recently produced the technical and creative for an award winning online marketing campaign for the Doubletree Hotel San Jose, California to increase the hotels web presence. We will be talking about it as one of the case studies at the MPI World Education Conference WEC in Salt Lake when Jon Trask and I present this July.

After starting out with a portal blog, the Doubletree staff takes turns doing daily and weekly postings. They also have attacked Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and travel sites to keep abreast of what clients are saying about the hotel and getting into those conversations for customer relations and quality control. The General Manager and the Director of Business Development produce a weekly web show where they discuss happenings at this popular San Jose hotel and the Silicon Valley that surrounds it.

Working on your web presence is getting more and more popular as businesses understand that when seeking information Google.com is usually the first choice of travelers. No longer do people just get their information from the phone book, look at magazine advertisements, watch commercials on Television etc…. They look to the web. What are you doing to catch the eyes of your clients?

How about this online campaign by Air New Zealand. Think they are catching peoples eyes?

Cool Pocket Projector to go with your Pocket Protector

I saw that Superstar presentation builder Nancy Duarte sent this across my twitter river today. I thought how wild it is everything is getting smaller and smarter.
I often walk into companies and plug into their ginormous projector with my Mac to show presentations and I thought the day soon will come when I pull out my iphone and a small projector like this Optoma EP-PK-101 PICO Pocket Projector- 4 oz. Cool Pocket Projector to go with your Pocket Protector and run through my presentation like James Bond and his deadly toys. I see deadly business gains coming. icon smile Cool Pocket Projector to go with your Pocket Protector

Seriously, the skinny on this little projector is its cool factor is off the charts. But the audio is like an old clock radio and you need a very dark room. It also gets pretty hot so be careful when returning it to your pocket. This might take away from the cool factor as you run screaming from the room. On the good side picture is great in a dark room. Rectangular lens creates wide image that keeps the image from stretching. Its around $400 dollars.

Why Twitter may implode for Event use (South by SouthWest Explosion)

I just got home from producing an event in Dallas and one thing I missed was the South by Southwest conference in Austin Texas. I planned to drive over from where I was but I needed to get back to the office. If you haven’t heard of South by Southwest it is a interactive, film and music wonderland.

I sat down and decided to see what was going on there at the event at www.search.twitter.com. Now Twitter became a breakout application from the last SXSW. (the hash tag used for it on twitter and acronym) The Sarah Lacy, Mark Zuckenberg interview, where the audience basically turned on the unsuspecting young interviewer who was incensing the audience with inside stories and more of a People magazine interview when the audience wanted a Wired interview. The whole audience seemed to be twittering on how bad Ms. Lacy was and someone offered 5 bucks to the first person that says “Zuck Sucks”. Lacy and Zuckerburg had no idea what was going on. This situation got the world wondering what twitter was. What was this new online tool to make it easy for conference attendees to chat freely and build a very interactive community for the people at the event. But also others could follow at home on www.search.twitter.com

Flash to today! I believe it is the first day of the conference. The hash tag sxsw# or sxsw is on fire on twitter search in the 10 minutes I am writing this 769 posts have come up. Now that Twitter is so mainstream I feel it is losing its effectiveness for large events like this. So how do you follow the stream? Maybe a list of hashtags should be sent out.
SXSWGreatSessions# to talk about sessions you like.
sxswbadsessions# for sessions to avoid
SXSWChanges# changes in schedule?
sxswquotes# which would be quotes from speakers that we all enjoy so much. etc…

As of now it is pretty overwhelming seeing. “Just got to the hotel sxsw# Ate dinner sxsw# so hung over sxsw#posted two thousand times. Lots and lots of noise! How could you possibly follow this onsite? Maybe you build feeds of topics you just want to hear about… I think Twitter is imploding at the SXSW conference. Is this the future of Twitter at conferences and events?

But we can look forward to the South by Southwest giant party atmosphere in the evenings the tweets should be very interesting and entertaining!

What do you think? Twitter imploding at SXSW?

ok I just finished doing tags for this and twittersearch is up to 1716 tweets in 20 min. wowza!

Update: Tim Inman http://www.twitter.com/TimInman pointed out this site. very cool! http://pepsicozeitgeist.com/

10 Things That Make Mike McAllens Experience Better

10 things that make for a great experience 10 Things That Make Mike McAllens Experience Better

1) Friends- I am amazed how in this down economy the relationships I have made in the past have now really come into play. Grass Shack Events & Media is busier than ever. It’s a different type of busy though, working with clients on all sorts of productions when budgets are disappearing. The relationships we have with our clients is adding value and building more and more trust and ultimately the friendships are cemented through business in this kinds of times. Coming up with creative ways to maximize the experience of attendees, customers, users is a hard, exciting battle.

2 Websitegrader- Google Analytics- These tools have made it possible for me to add so much value to our new media clients. Especially these days when targeted SEO (search Engine Optimization) is so important. It is amazing the FREE stats and information that are available that anyone can use to make online produces better.

3 iphone/ipod/camera- The iphone has changed my life because its really the only techie thing in my pockets these days. I used to carry a camera, my cell phone and my ipod. This was really cumbersome and if I wore them all on my belt I looked like I was wearing Batman’s utility belt. [Read more...]
