What I liked at Web 2.0

I spent the day yesterday at WEB 2.o at the Moscone West in San Francisco yesterday.

I am not going to waste your time by writing about things I did not like. I did have the pleasure of walking around the Expo hall looking at some of the new technology with my friend Kalani. He asks great questions and we had a pretty god time tag teaming the big show floor.

Things I really liked.

1) Camwii CamWii.com its a handy little free app (for now) for screen sharing. If you are having a phone conversation you can just show the other person on the other end by sharing your screen. Simply log onto the website and it shows your desktop. The person on the phone gets a URL from me and then pulls up my desktop. Pretty cool. They also have a pointer so we can make sure we are both talking about the same thing.
You can drag what ever you want the other person to see. So a powerpoint, image, anything you can put on your screen. Its really intuitive and is a fast connection for creative and ideas you want to share. This is a great way for e-learning, sales calls,

2) TRIGGIT- www.triggit.com
One thing I have been searching to understand is running ads on my new online ventures. It is like a 6 billion dollar industry now (according to a AdTech speech I heard) Triggit really makes this process easy. You can choose what ads to run, drag and drop ads, automatically optimizes the ads to make you more money, gives you analytics and tracking of the ads. I saw a cool demo and I think this is just the ticket I am looking for.

3) Snapshots is also cool. It shows a preview of the links you put in your site so people can look at the link without leaving your page. The sell ads on your site for this service. No revenue for you though which kinda sucks. Basically a free feature for your site.

Another great source is my friend David Sparks blog who talks about the things he liked and disliked at web 2.0.

New Media Madness

If you are not sure about some popular technologies which are filtering into corporate communications.

Blog. A shortened form of weblog, a blog is a Web site that displays regular journal entries. While the earliest blogs were largely personal, thousands of corporate blogs exist today—more than 8 percent of Fortune 500 companies have one. A blog that uses video posts, rather than text, is called a vlog.

LinkedIn. A MySpace for the business world, this online networking Web site allows users to post profiles and search other user profiles to make professional contacts, search for new clients or recruit for open positions—the basic membership is free.

Twitter: A micro-blogging site. Keep in touch with your community by micro-blogging by 140 characters. Its a crazy new way of communicating. Several conferences are using Twitter to give out alerts on goings on.

Podcast. A downloadable audio (and sometimes video) file, often used to disseminate news stories, tutorials or radio shows. Users can subscribe to regularly recurring podcasts via RSS [see below].

RSS.Stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” RSS feeds are offered by media outlets and enable them to automatically update and distribute their content to anyone who has subscribed to their feed.

Second Life. An online, virtual world that boasts over six million users with its own currency and economy. A user’s virtual self is called an “avatar.”

SMS
Stands for “Short Message Service.” SMS services allow users to exchange text messages over wireless networks. Works well for disseminating real-time information updates, like changing traffic or weather conditions, to mobile devices.

Web 2.0
Coined in 2003, the phrase usually refers to online tools and communities that employ a model of multiple-user collaboration rather than static, informative content.

Wikis. A type of Web site whose content can be easily edited by users. The most well-known wiki is Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that any Web visitor can add to or edit, but wikis are suitable for many collaborative projects.

Setting Yourself Apart from the Herd….Moooooo

minicard hand shot Setting Yourself Apart from the Herd....Moooooo

With all this Web 2.0 talk and Social Media events going on, how do you set yourself apart? How about using Moo.com to make a business card which is unusual that people will remember. Every conference I attend I usually come home with a pocket full of business cards. I always try and contact each person I met, with a short note. Why not get a card from Moo, who will take your images from your computer uploaded to their site or from sites like Flickr, bebo, fotolog, livejournal, and even show off your avatar or Second Life creations with a Moo Second Life business card. You just email them a snapshot from your second life camera.
