Mike McAllen: Welcome back to the Meetings Podcast, This is Mike McAllen from Grass Shack Events and Media. Today we have our friend Nancy Spooner from Tempo Live Events on again. Hi Nancy
Nancy Spooner Good evening
Mike McAllen I won’t go into your background or anything because if anybody wants to know more about you they can go to an older podcast or there is also a blog post and everything about you. Or they can go to Tempo Live Events where is a nice little synopsis of everything you do, because you do do a lot of stuff
Nancy Spooner yes
Mike McAllen [laughing] So today we were gonna talk about why to hire event contractors
Nancy Spooner Fine with me, I like the topic
Mike McAllen Nice and that is your thing
Nancy Spooner It is
Mike McAllen It is my thing also [laughing]
Nancy Spooner I know. Contractors, we are situated so beautifully for this economy. I think hiring event contractors is the way to go.
Mike McAllen Yes, it is exactly. So why do you think people should hire event contractors.
Nancy Spooner Well for one, it’s a little red. You don’t have somebody sitting in your office taking up space, taking up your copy machine, taking up phone lines, got a salary to pay, got benefits to pay, we are pretty cheap because we come in per project and work on that project with you and when the project’s done the contractor goes away. Probably the main reason I think in this economy people should hire event contractors
Mike McAllen Yes I really agree and that was kind of the thought that I had when I started with my company actually because we are a very small firm and I found when I was at my old company that it was a large company we had a lot of people working there and I was in charge of finding all these people to fill the spots at events and I found that most of them are, had moved from big companies, they had learned the trade if they are a whatever in the event business and they had moved out as a freelancer and so then you can really pick and choose your teams
Nancy Spooner Hmm and that gets me into one of the 2nd reasons I love event contractors. They are very talented. Because event contractors are only as good as their last gig and if they are not good at what they do they are not going to be hired again. So they often wear more hats [0:02:31][not sure], they can stage manage, they can make some power point presentations and they have got to have lot of skills and have to be good to make themselves marketable. Because I know and you know we have hired contractors in the past where you go oh darn, not the best and they don’t come back. But there is very few that are like the others because you won’t make it in this business if you are not good at what you do as a contractor.
Mike McAllen Now you said your second one, how many do you have
Nancy Spooner I have 6 points
Mike McAllen Oh my gosh ok.
Nancy Spooner You could add more
Mike McAllen I didn’t know that I could go off, I was just gonna start chatting every time you told. What’s your 3rd point?
Nancy Spooner I know
Mike McAllen [Laughing]
Nancy Spooner Umm, the first perspective – The contractors get around and I can go from stage management at the X games and turn around and be at the tradeshow at the next week. And take what I have done at my action sports event and turn my tradeshow booth into like an action sporting event that the client wasn’t even expecting but absolutely loved it and I have done it before.
And I thought wow its because I come from so many different shows and so many contractors that I hire come from all these different shows that they are gonna bring a fresh perspective. They are not somebody’s that been sitting at the desk and has been working on his tradeshow booth for the last 5 years. Contracts are just gonna come out form out of the box and jump into your box and go hey look what I can do.
Mike McAllen Awesome. You know that’s so funny. That’s funny because I always thought that when I worked at my old company that we would have these brainstorming sessions and they would be all the same people in the room and then we would be working together. I was working there for 8 years and it seemed to be the same people in the room every time. And what a funny, it kind of come into my head now, I always thought we should bring everybody into this brainstorming like get the mail man to come in sit in there, just get a different perspectives
Nancy Spooner totally
Mike McAllen But what a better even better idea is to call in a bunch of freelancers, have a freelance brainstorm session where you just bring in a bunch of people may be you and I should organize that and we will have like just brainstorming from event people [laughing]
Nancy Spooner That’s a really good idea. Because we have seen what works at events and what doesn’t work and why have something boring, when you can have somebody with a fresh perspective jump in and go hey I just did this it worked really well
Mike McAllen Wow this podcast radio may be this is our Microsoft Apple moment that we start the company
Nancy Spooner Our little Microsoft totally I just went off
Mike McAllen [laughing] Alright so what’s the next one, No. 4 we had now, no. 4
Nancy Spooner No.4 customer service – and it kind of goes back to all the pub, contractors always go to the last gig. So they are gonna make your client happy because they know if your clients are not happy you are not gonna be happy and they are not gonna be back. Very very rarely met a contractor with a bad attitude, have you?
Mike McAllen No
Nancy Spooner They are not out there because if you don’t like them they are gone.
Mike McAllen Wow, that’s great
Nancy Spooner So they have to get that personality that’s, they can handle all kinds of clients, I have had and you have had some really rough people to work with but we have to learn how to handle them and work with all types of people and make them happy because if your clients aren’t happy and you hired me, then I know you are not happy.
Mike McAllen [laughing] so true. And that’s the funny thing too because when I started our company I thought I am having too many problems with my internal stuff going on, not to knock my old company they are great people I really like them all they are still but it was just like constantly internal stuff, constantly when I thought the client should be the one who are the problem not my people working with [laughing]
Nancy Spooner Yeah. When you are on a show for a long time, you are in the company for a long time you do get the internal conflicts and its just this grinding urrrrr, but when you are a contractor and you are just on the show for a couple of weeks you can handle anything. you can handle any kind of client
Mike McAllen You are right
Nancy Spooner You know the tunnel has got the light at the end of it and you are just gonna move on to your next one
Mike McAllen Right right right so smart, so smart ok what’s the nest one
Nancy Spooner Well, even though you have got a contractor if we are hired on repeat events which I am often hired on the same event every year, there is familiarity which you can have as a staffer sure, but as a contractor, you keep hiring the same contractors we can go pick up your event and take off where we left off and I will use the X games again for example because I am doing the X games now for I don’t know 12 – 13 years now and they let me go one year and I kind of let them go one year because I was so busy and they were the one event that I had to say you got to go because they were just not set up to me financially, how was my work wow.
The next year she came back she brought my pay the way brought it up to where it should have been and she said you know what you know where to find your radio, you knew where credentials were, you knew where catering was, you knew your TV producers were, you know just like you know all the players, just having you here, knowing what to do and not having a new person bug me about where do I register, where do I do this, she just said it was just worth it. it is a waste of money to bring in somebody new and when you bring back somebody, a contractor who has done the gig before, they know where to go to get a cup of coffee.
Mike McAllen So true. And I have that too I know with a lot of our clients that, we have repeat clients that I always have the same contractors on every show and they expect to see them there. Hey where is so and so you know, they are already nervous, they don’t do this all the time these executives lot of time they have their one sales meeting a year and they are nervous and they don’t want to show it but if they have the same, even one guy who hands them the microphone they [laughing] they like that. You are so right the familiarity its a huge
Nancy Spooner Its so true and if you bring back the whole team its even more fun. Because I produce some pharmaceutical meetings every year and I bring back, when the event production company hires me they are surrounding with the same team every year and you better believe they love seeing the graphic artist show up and they love seeing me show up because they know I have done this before, you know my graphic artist has done this before and they know to expect.
Mike McAllen So so true, ok what’s no. 6, is that the final one, no. 6
Nancy Spooner Grand finale, unless you want to add some more on to it. but he has got no commitment, and that goes both ways
Mike McAllen [laughing]
Nancy Spooner You are the production company hired as a contractor and its just not working out, don’t worry there is light at the end of the tunnel. They will soon or you can have them leave and odds are if you are not getting along with that contractor they are not getting along with you, you guys will be happy to move on to your next project. And when you hire somebody full time you have got all the HR stuff to deal with and its really hard to let someone go when they are full time on your staff and contractors, its just like okay, just a little swat on the back thanks for coming out [laughing] See you next time or I won’t
Mike McAllen [laughing]
Nancy Spooner Because it is both ways. If I don’t like a production company which, that’s very rare, but it is there, I don’t have to go back but the best part for you guys is you don’t have to have the contractor back, you don’t have to worry about HR and the guilt of letting somebody go. Once its done they are done
Mike McAllen Right, alright Nancy fantastic work and thank you so much again for talking with me. I guess these were the top 6 reasons to hire event contractors. So we will call it Fantastic
Nancy Spooner So we will call it
Mike McAllen [laughing] Alright I will talk to you next time. Thank you so much again
Nancy Spooner You are welcome and thank you for having me
